How to Sit Correctly on an Orthopaedic Cushion: Height, Angle, Habits
By Олег МельничукPublished: 2 min read

In short: a cushion changes the height and tilt of the seat, so once you have one you need to readjust the chair, desk and monitor: feet on the floor, knees at about 90°, back against the backrest, pelvis in a neutral position. A cushion helps only together with good posture and breaks.
What the cushion changes
The extra thickness lifts you a few centimetres and can change pelvic tilt and seat depth. So:
- your eyes sit higher relative to the monitor;
- your elbows are higher relative to the desk;
- your feet may no longer touch the floor;
- the seat depth changes.
Step-by-step setup
- Place the cushion on the seat flat, cut-out to the back (if it has one), the full depth.
- Sit deep, so your back touches the backrest.
- Adjust chair height: thighs roughly parallel to the floor, knees at about 90°, feet on the floor or a footrest.
- Check depth: a small gap (a few centimetres) remains between the seat edge and your knees.
- Pelvis neutral: do not tilt it back ("sitting on the tailbone") or lean too far forward.
- Adjust the desk and elbows: elbows at about 90°, shoulders relaxed.
- Check the monitor: top of the screen at eye level or slightly below, see monitor height and posture.
- Lower back: add support if needed, see tailbone or lumbar cushion.
Habits
- Change position every 20–30 minutes.
- Stand up every 30–60 minutes, see how long to play without a break.
- Do not sit on the edge of the cushion.
- Do not cross your legs for long.
- Do not lean back onto the tailbone.
Common mistakes
- A cushion that is too thick, lifting the feet off the floor.
- The cushion shifts. Check the non-slip base.
- Not adjusting the monitor and desk.
- Sitting too deep or too close to the edge.
- Expecting the cushion to treat you.
If it gets worse
- Give it 1–2 weeks to get used to.
- Check thickness and position.
- Try a different cushion.
- If pain increases, or numbness or weakness appears, stop using it and see a doctor, see tailbone pain from sitting work.
