New Mouse Pad Smells and the Edges Curl: What to Do

By Марина ШевчукPublished: 2 min read

In short: the smell of a new pad is rubber and adhesive off-gassing, and it usually fades with a few days of airing. Curled edges appear because the pad was stored rolled up; they flatten in 1–3 days under weight or after gentle warming. If the smell is sharp and does not go away, you can return the pad.

Why does a new pad smell?

The base of most pads is rubber (natural or synthetic) glued to fabric. During production and storage volatile compounds are released from the rubber, which you notice as smell. They build up in sealed packaging, so the smell is strongest on unpacking. This is typical for new rubber products and does not by itself mean the pad is unsafe.

How to remove the smell

  1. Unroll the pad and air it in a well-ventilated room, out of direct sun. The smell usually fades within 2–7 days.
  2. Wipe the base with a damp cloth and a drop of mild soap and let it dry fully.
  3. Cloth pads can be washed following the manufacturer's instructions, usually in cool water, and left to dry naturally.
  4. Do not use fragrances, alcohol, solvents or hot water. They can damage the adhesive or fabric.

Why do the edges curl?

Pads are sold rolled up or folded. Rubber remembers its shape and at first "bows" slightly. The fabric and base also expand differently with temperature, especially after a cold delivery.

How to flatten it

  1. Lay it flat on a desk fabric side up and leave it for 24–72 hours.
  2. Put a flat heavy object on top (books) so the edges lie down.
  3. You can gently warm it with room warmth or by placing the pad somewhere sunny but not hot. Do not use a hair dryer close up or iron it: the rubber and adhesive can be damaged.
  4. Roll it the opposite way. If the pad came in a roll, roll it in the opposite direction overnight, then lay it flat.

If the edges still will not lie flat after a week and the pad is thin, the cause may be a manufacturing defect. Contact the seller.

When the smell is a reason to return it

  • A sharp chemical smell that does not fade after a week of airing.
  • Headache or eye and throat irritation near the pad.
  • A sticky or oily base surface.

In that case do not use the pad in a closed room and contact the seller. This is not medical advice: if symptoms bother you, see a doctor.

How to avoid the problem

  • Unpack the pad right after delivery and leave it unrolled.
  • Do not store the pad rolled up longer than needed.
  • Read reviews about smell and the care instructions.
